This message is from: Nancy Newport <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thanks to those who replied to me re my foal with an elevated temp.
Just an update. We still don't know what it is, although we are now looking into a cooling problem, because he just seems so healthy besides being hot. It is very hot and dry (not normal) here in Florida right now and Jagr was born with a lot of flesh on him and a lot of hair compared to other foals around here. My vet called the vet school and someone mentioned a syndrome in Clydes where the breeders shave and cool the foal for a little while (week?) as the normal cooling system seems to take a little while to kick in. Then the foals are fine. Joyce Concklin a breeder here in Florida said she watches her foals carefully for heat especially when they are born in the really hot months, she mentioned shaving the bellies and misting. I wonder, Joyce, if any of yours had elevated temps like Jagr has? Right now I have clipped everything except his head and legs and am hosing him regularly and leaving sprinklers on every where in the paddock so he lays on the moist grass. By the way, he loved being clipped and hosed, and if he wasn't imprinted he would be now. With frequent temps taken, hosing, clipping, blood drawn, etc., I just about have it covered. He holds no grudges, though, still comes up and takes whatever I've got. Nancy Newport Gainesville, Florida
