in the winter my farrier puts pads on my pulling horse to keep the snow
balls out of her feet.  the pads work really well for this purpose and have
the added benefit of protecting the feet from rocks.

to prevent stuff from going up inside the pad, he squirts silicon gel in
between the sole and the pad which gives it a cushy barrier that will not
let debris inside.

I'm not sure what affect this has on the foot if the horse is used in a
sport that causes lots of pounding, but it works great for our needs.
