      Joel.  I also share your " stern correction ", but without the Wham !  
when mine move their feet, once Ive told them to plant it. Whoa and stand 
mean just that, without a major reason, and is taught from the start of 
training here. But....if you refer to your horse as " dam " with every 
infraction, what point is it to yell  "  WHOA DAMMIT WHOA  !   !  !   when 
they do something really serious, like trying to leap puddles while hitched, 
or rubbing each others bridles off 'cause their itchy.  <ggg>
