I'm guessing because it's not recognizing the embedded font - you're
seeing the character from the default font, not the embedded font.
A few things I try to make sure of:
1. Don't name the embedded font in the Flash 8 swf file the same as
the system font.

I have created a Flash 8 swf as per:
