You can place them on <mx:Image>

<mx:Canvas id="myCanvas" width="100%" height="100%" >
    mx:Image id="spritelayer" x="0" y="0" scaleContent="false"
autoLoad="true" />
</mx:Canvas>

then in as:

spriteLayer.addChild(mysprite);
etc.
