set a class to the component tag:

<mx:itemRenderer>
>   <mx:Component className="myRenderer">
>     <mx:Text  styleName="myStyle">
>                                                                           
> </mx:Text>
>   </mx:Component>
> </mx:itemRenderer>

and define in the CSS file

myRenderer {

....

}

(don't put a period before the CSS class name)

This solution was given to me by Alex Bernhard from Janus and I pass
it on for those who also find this useful.
