I found when I first started out doing contract work that my initial rate was 
too low, and that when I raised my rate by $20/hr, I actually got more work.  I 
think that when I raised my rates, clients believed my services were more 
valuable and were more likely to buy them.  In this economic climate that might 
be less likely to work, but it's worth considering.
