Make sure you click on the "Show processes from all users" button on the task 
manager window. Usually there are a bunch of hidden processes. Example: Many 
virus protection programs do optimize tasks at the worst time. Recent Nvidia 
video drivers like to download game previews in the background. Windows update 
maybe downloaded/installing

This is likely a DPC issue (you can search this list or Google) on how to look 
for it.

 

Usually its bad drivers (out of date drivers).

 

What chipset is in the Abocom firewire card? When you go to the device manager, 
look under 1394 devices and what does it say is present?
