Hi all

Thankfully, after 6 years of very bad back health, I am becoming
able to sit for hours at a time and am starting to enjoy S&P action
in cw and rtty contests. I played a few hours last weekend in the DL
RTTY contest (a real treat btw) and did some this weekend in the IARU.

Last weekend I started using the SDR1K and just didn't feel very
comfortable so switched over to my Orion2. After a while I figured I
might as well figure out how to use the SDR1K in contests so switched
back over.

I decided to use the amplifier this weekend and had the usual
experiments to get RF out of the chain. The most success I had was to
use the radioshack isolators and more than a few ferrites.

The question to the list is: What hints and tips do you have on
contesting with the SDR? I have been playing some with the Shuttlepro
but ultimately think the mouse is just as good (if not better since
you already have it in your hand). I never got the hotwheel program
to send the mouse wheel commands to PowerSDR, does anyone have any
tips on how to make it work. Its not less disruptive to make the
powersdr window active versus the old manual action of turning the
tuning knob of the radio, but if hotwheels could work, it would be
very very nice.

For S&P action, do you point and shoot or do you "mouse wheel" your
way thru the bands. Do you use narrow (e.g., 250hz) filters or keep
them wide?

How does the SDR act when you are running? Anything to watch out for?

I am getting more comfortable every hour but it is definitely
different than with using an old-style rig!
