Subject: RFI In Shack

I have seen several posts regarding problems with RFI in the shack resulting in suggestions of the use of various shielded cables or ferrite beads on others!!

To my knowledge, no one has ever suggested the use of an RF Isolator on the coax to keep the RF out of the shack. In my view shielded cables, although necessary in some cases, and ferrites are a bandaid and not a real solution!! The real solution is to keep it out of the shack!!

I had an instance where after receiving my Flex 3000, my computer would go nuts everytime I transmitted on my antenna!! Since I had used RF Isolators before, I tried one on coax and viola, the computer became stable and has been ever since!

BTW, the antenna used at the time was a small magnetic loop about 15 ft away from the radio/computer so I initially thought of straight radiated power but it really turned out to conducted RF on the coax!

I learned some time ago that if things acted strangely in the shack when transmitting to make sure I had an Isolator on the coax!!

Being in Canada at the time I got my Isolator from Maple Leaf Communications ----- http://www.mapleleafcom.com/, but there are other sources!

Try one as it may solve your problem too!!

Cheer!
