I found that at times audio glitches were occuring while operating PowerSDR
and MixW. I suspected that there were programs in the background
periodically running and cutting into my CPU's capacity. My CPU was running
at about 25-30% with occasional jumps near 100% when the glitches in audio
occured.

So after searching, I found this site:
http://www.realtime-vista.com/administration/2007/05/stop_programs_from_running_at.htm
It has information on limiting startup programs. I made the changes
recommended and but allowed the ShuttlePro software to load. Now the CPU is
cruising along at 14-18% on receive and about 24% when transmitting cw using
MixW. The audio glitches and CPU usage spikes are gone. If you are having
similar problems with XP, I am sure that the same maneuver might help.

It would be nice if I could figure out a way to switch from the full startup
setting to this modified bootup mode without rebooting, but am sure glad
that I was able to lighten the load for my CPU while operating!
