Personally I use a 10Hz step size for both SSB & CW.

Whilst I find I can get in the general ball park 80% of the time, and can do 
the rest with a little mouse wheel turning, I do find that lengthy sessions of 
tuning around the bands becomes less and less comfortable due to arthritic 
fingers.

To overcome this I use the mouse for click tuning and a homebrewed VFO knob 
(surplus USB mouse and Ten Tec rotary encoder) mounted on a panel which falls 
naturally where my left hand is. The knob isn't weighted and doesn't need to 
be. Since it is only controlling a limited frequency excursion to tune in the 
last few 10's of Hz I rarely have a problem with the frequency display having 
to play catch up.
