Check where the binary is executing from. If its c:\windows or
c:\windows\system32 it could be a virus. Otherwise its part of the
indexing process that supposedly speeds up searches. I have turned
indexing off as it is a performance pig (as you have witnessed). I can
stand a few extra

Windows indexing is the FIRST thing I disable on a new system, right after
installing any required video/motherboard drivers.
