New guy, had my rig about a week. I see that you all have listed a
couple of inexpensive hand mics to use with this rig...are there other
low cost desk mics that plug and play, or easily converted to the RJ
style ?

The mics for the 1500 or any flex radio aren't that complicated at all.
With some basic tools and a computer $10 desk mic, you should be able to
get it to work. You just need a PTT switch. That is 1 pretty low cost
solution.
If you want a Ham radio mic, then anything made for a Yeasu
