I hear through the grape vine that one of the University of MN departments
has a mothballed DC-9 procedural trainer they are looking to get rid of.

As I understand it, long ago it used to have some ancient computers to drive
all the engine/system gauges (no flight controls/gauges in this particular
sim.) Those computer(s) are long gone, and the wiring bundles (lots of it)
were somewhat arbitrarily chopped off. In addition, this sim was finally
disassembled for storage by a local moving company (read college kids came
in and ripped it all apart and carted it off.)

At one point, there were some students that were going to outfit this sim
with glass displays and turn it into a more modern sim, but they graduated
about 10% of the way into the project.

So I don't know exactly what's left of all this or what condition it is in,
but you would get a DC-9 type cockpit enclosure (made out of wood sections,
but mostly in the shape of a DC-9 cockpit. You'd probably get a lot of
system gauges and panels and switches, probably most of them hacked up but
they might at least sit there and look pretty. I seem to recall there were
decent commercial jet type seats and a few other nice things.

It's not the sort of thing that would fit in the trunk of your Honda civic.
It's not the sort of thing that would fit in your dorm room or basement.
It's more the sort of thing you'd need to rent a U-Haul truck and come fetch
yourself (location Minneapolis, MN.) It's the sort of thing you'd need
maybe 9-10' ceilings to fit in your space.

It would take a *lot* of work to turn into something useful, but at the same
time, it would give you a great head start if you always wanted to put
together a commercial jet type simulator. John Wojnaroski (LFSTech.com) has
been developing commercial jet type glass displays and system models along
with CDU hardware and other nice stuff that is all compatible with
FlightGear (see his web site and the projects subpage at www.flightgear.org)

If anyone would like to make a serious enquiry, let me know and I can try to
track down a point of contact for you.
