It turns out my problem was that the some system library was getting compiled with -march=pentium4 (I don't know which one). XFree was always being compiled with -march=pentium3, however. After I compiled the entire system with -march=pentium3, the problem went away.
On an unrelated note, XFree
ny patches (Xau bug). However, none of the patches that
were left
after my initial patch clean-up seem to be likely to be the cause of the
problem. Should I turn out to be wrong, I will send another message. In the
meantime,

This is Gentoo 1.4_rc1. Most other people running the same distribution
don't have this problem (Gentoo forums). However, my attempts to get help
there have, so far, been unsuccessful.
