SMF 2 is still not stable, and I'm not terribly keen on using release
candidates for production deployments. I'll give it a try if you want,
though. That said, there are A LOT of things that we can tweak about SMF 1.

April. I have put a lot of blockers in place. It still doesn't stop people
from trying, though, and doesn't end the problem altogether. I purged all
the spam accounts with 0 posts yesterday, and yes there was a thousand or so

Meaning I had issues with Joomla specifically in the past because the
back-end was poorly organized... I think we can prevent that and still have
a very feature-rich way of managing the site.
