I usually add a hard space between markers so they stand out a bit
more, but that doesn't really prevent deleting them; just makes it
less likely to select more than one by mistake.

We offer a plugin called MarkerTools, which (in addition to lots of
other things) will let you know when you delete a marker. You can
download it and test drive it for free for 30 days ..
