I am by no means an Acrobat guru, but as far as I know, there's no way to
add a status type. Maybe you could use Accepted (which everyone who opens
the PDF could see) or a checkmark (which will only show for you)?

I would guess that either your system security is set up to disallow launching
of links within PDFs or the security settings on the PDF you created are
disallowing that.

Apparently, it's a feature introduced with Adobe 9.3.3. I haven't tried
doing anything like this for a while, so I didn't realize it was no longer
working.

Probably because viruses can masquerade as PDFs too.
