Based on no evidence whatsoever, my guess is that the character palette somehow
became parked at a location beyond the bounds of your desktop. But I'm afraid
that I don't remember the trick for recovering off-desktop palettes.

I have a text inset FM file that is used in many different books, so it
contains a good bit of conditional text. It also contains cross references
to other chapters in one of these books. I have these Xrefs marked as
conditional as well, and they are always hidden unless I want to view
conditions

1.) Turn on All the conditions in the text inset file and make sure that the
