I've been away for a very long time. Is it possible to download FM with a
licence and install it on your own computer? Or is only available by
(crippling) monthly subscription?

JPG is for pictures (can create pixel artifacts with images like screen
captures - random dots with colors not from the original, etc.).

When distilling, the PDF Images settings should show all Downsample: Off,
Compression: ZIP. This has worked well for us. If gives the best reproduction
on screen and the maximum lossless compression of the images.

PNG is the best format for screen captures. Sometimes you can get away with
GIF. Generally, PNGs are larger. As a rule, I never use JPEG for screen
captures.
However, the real question is your image settings when creating the
PDF--they may be altering the format.
