Actually, the original NeXT computer was designed before CD-ROM was standardized. The so-called Yellow Book that contained the CD-ROM standards was published in 1988, the same year that the NeXT was introduced. Instead, the original NeXT computer came with a magneto-optical disc drive that used

Well, Huh! Guess my memory isn't all that reliable. I had it in my head that the NeXT only had a CDROM drive for external media. Thanks for this, Robert. On 6/15/20 2:16 PM, Robert Lauriston wrote: FM3 for NextStep came on five floppy disks.

As one of the writers who wrote the documentation for that generation of FM (Chris Despopoulos was part of that crew), I recall that most of the documentation was included on the delivery media (for NeXT, that would have been a CD). Unfortunately, I don't have (that I know of), a copy any

I wrote software reviews for Nextworld back in those days, and I don't recall any printed documentation. The documentation for the operating system, FrameMaker, etc. was all on disk. If you rummage around in the FrameMaker directories, you should find it somewhere. Next's own docs are online:

There is a copy of FM4 Windows (sealed in the box) on ebay for $15.99 (or best offer); I'd offer them $5. Also, there is a copy of The Frame Handbook by Linda Branagan (circa 1994) for less than $11 w/free shipping. I have seen the Branagan book in some college libraries. My recollection is

Since NeXTSTEP OS was based on UNIX, I think the Unix FM manual instructions probably cover most of the functioning of the FM program. One thing to watch out for in such an old version of FrameMaker is the 'grey box' problem that used to crop up where graphics would suddenly become grey boxes.
