The "as is" attribute
The "as is" attribute is used to specify that the style will not affect the
given property when the style is applied to existing text. If the property is
set to either "yes" (checked) or "no" (unchecked), it will either apply or
clear that characteristic fro the text when the style is applied.
As this was a new style, I'm not sure that "as is" would be applicable...?
And there wasn't any text in the paragraph when I created the style. I
copied in text that I "cleaned" in Notepad first (the text contained both
upper and lower case).
I'll try Winfried's MIF suggestion later today.

It's not that I have more than one checkbox checked, it's that the checkmark
shows for both Lower Case and Upper case when I select each option from the
dropdown menu (which is truly weird).
This hasn't affected any of the other new styles I created or the ones I
updated.

Be aware that there are three settings for the check boxes. A check mark
is on. A solid box is "keep as is." And an empty box is off. When I
first started in FrameMaker, I thought clicking the box once, so that
the check mark was gone was turning it off. It is not. It sets it to as

version of Frame as part of its Samples directory!

Hmm, I just looked at my copy of the template pack and the square behind
the chapter number is missing. How annoying.
The good news is that if you click File > Document > New and then click
Explore Standard Templates at the bottom of the page, there's one with the
color block under User Guide > Ch
If no one contacts you, try the Adobe Template Pack 1, Book 7 style. That
has a background image for the chapter number and I'm sure you could adapt
that easily.
