I, like you, leave a trailing space. In fact, if I have an anchor - table or
frame - hanging on the end of a para, I generally put an em space on either
side of it so it's out t

I get the same results. Even if I add a \P to the change, I then get a
new line and both pilchrows take the character formatting of the
first character in the following line.
