Does anyone with /extensive experience/ with FrameMaker 9 think it is
worth upgrading from FM8? I downloaded the trial and played with it a
bit and like the new menus. But was any substantially or even slightly
useful functionality added that makes it must have?

If you're using it to author in DITA, then I would say yes. If you're
authoring in unstructured, I would say meh.
