Given the network delay of a trans-oceanic hop, it's unlikely to work well.
Why don't you just download the free eval version and work with it locally,
as you would if you upgraded?

You must have at least Acrobat installed in the UK with the Acrobat PDF
printer driver. After that, it's just network issues.

I tried downloading the Standard eval - the Free Trial link forces me to the
Pro page. (I know you'll try it.) We have a problem with our own software that
the developers think can be solved using 8 or 9 Standard. We just need a proof
of concept.

is in direct violation of the Acrobat End User License Agreement.
You need a server version of Distiller for this purpose.
