Yes, you have to save as FM9 or FM9 won't open it. There is a menu item to do
this, but that is not very convenient with multi-file books.
You can use Extendscript to affect the file save function though, and might be
able to do the books that way.

Yes, you do have to save FM 10 files down to 9 in order to open them with 9.
