I'm using FM9 so this may not apply, but I had to reinstall earlier this summer
and for whatever reason, I lost access to the character palette utility.
Some bright soul on the list suggested I update Java as this item is Java based.
I updated and it magically reappeared!

Right, CharacterMap.exe is launched automatically along with FrameMaker.exe.

For me, it loads with FrameMaker.exe.
Have you tried clicking "Show processes from all users" in Task
Manager? Depending on how FM was installed, it might be running under
some other user credentials.

Good point, Stuart.
This is a new computer for me (new job! yay!), and I haven't needed to
run CharacterMap, so that may be a factor. The computer is running
Windows 7, 64-bit.

That's interesting, because I've got Frame 10 running right now, and
CharacterMap.exe is NOT a running process for me.

control when it starts. Is it definitely not starting until you start
Frame 10, or is it running before you start

The rightward arrow is Unicode U+2192.
The first thing you need to do is choose a font that that character.
At least in Windows 7, Arial, Courier New, and Times New Roman all have it.

It shows up in Windows Task Manager as CharacterMap.exe *32 on my

Shmuel, thanks for the ASCII codes. I used to have that list, but lost it at
some point. Unfortunately it doesn't have that arrow on it that I was
looking for, but it has a lot of other useful symbols.
Rick, thanks. But I still can't find that palette. I even managed to get my
UI pretty mess
Hi Tim,
FrameMaker 10 still has the character palette (File > Utilities > Character
Palette), but the FrameMaker 9 (and above) window tends to steal the focus
from other windows. For example, if you try to bring the Console window to
the front, the main FrameMaker window will sometimes jump in
