I’ve had several of these cameras with the same problem. It’s in the handle at
the swivel joint: a wire from the battery compartment into the body gets out of
place. It’s a weakness in the design of these otherwise robust cameras.

1. Get a schematic and see what is between the battery and the meter. Odds
are you have at least a battery check switch and a fuse.
2. Check the fuse, check the switch, using the continuity test function on
a DMM. If you don't have a DMM buy the bottom of the line Fluke 101 for $50

I have two Canon Autozoom 814 Electronics & they've both developed the same
problem:
fresh batteries, but zero reaction in the battery check window and not running
at all.The battery compartments are clean, no corrosion.
