It was a huge problem :)
I had to switch to oss following the "pkg info -D firefox" instructions.
If that is ok, restart firefox and when about:support is shown, Audio Backend
is switched to oss.

I switched to firefox-esr and sound now works. As no other changes were made
the issue lies with Firefox. I can switch back and forth between esr and
