I'm looking for a way to move everything connected with ports and
packages aside, so that I can start fresh but with the ability to
easily roll it back when things go badly (as they surely will).
I have in mind to something like this:
# cd /usr
# mkdir old
# mv ports local old
# mkdir ports

gnome@. Unfortunately, the build broke a month ago or so, and it needs
some love from someone much more familiar with gnomeisms to make it
functional. gnome@ has indicated they don't
It's obsolete now, since the port has been upgraded to 1.52. I checked
the sources, all changes have been incorporated, so this PR should be
closed.
