The only way I'm able to update now is to uninstall openssl and nginx, then
update curl, then reinstall nginx (which pulls in openssl). This was not
required on several previous update cycles.

No, that what a missunderstood.
There are some ports have USES=readline in the Makefile.
But the warning "
/You have to add USES+=readline" appears. (the warning uses the "+", but
that was not what I meant)./

the question mark is a typo, should be
USES= ssl:libressl

This should not needed if I had DEFAULT_VERSIONS=ssl=libressl in
