We have done this for openssl 0.9x before, not with good results.

You are correct,
but your system uses an older (cached) version of the vuxml file.
Please update your cache with:
pkg audit -F

Sadly further work on this general problem has been suspended.
I hoped the current package tools where up to the task,
making this bump obsolete, but I have been prooven wrong.

are in trouble when they are not linked against the same version.
so each App should be linked with openssl he same way as its dependencies.

However, people connecting get 454 4.3.3 tls not available after start
and in /var/log/maillog i see [ip] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN
during connection to IPv4
You need TLS (openssl) Support, and maybe SMTPS Support as well.
