This is weird, but the fix for my system (thanks Albert) is
to force the AGP to PCI bus by setting the appropriate (or
maybe inappropriate:-) option in the Device section of my
xorg.conf, i.e:
Section "Device"
Option "BusType" "PCI"
Identifier "Card0"
