Help building/running SDL/OpenGL code

2009-12-22 Thread Richard Mace
I developed a small molecular dynamics simulation under Linux some time ago. Since recently moving to FreeBSD I thought that I'd try to get it running here, too. However, although I am able to get the code to build, it dumps core -- apparently before getting to any user code! During the build (

How to build VLC port

2009-12-12 Thread Richard Mace
Sorry if this is well-known. I have googled but came up with nothing. (I am relatively new to FreeBSD.) I am running 8.0-RELEASE. I am trying to build VLC with # cd /usr/ports # make install clean But I get the message: ===> vlc-1.0.3_4,3 is marked as broken: doesn't build with dirac. *** Err

Cannot write to nfsv4 share

2009-12-11 Thread Richard Mace
I am running 8.0-RELEASE. I am able to mount an nfsv4 share on a Debian GNU/Linux server, but I cannot write to it. I realise that nfsv4 is experimental on FreeBSD, but I am tantalisingly close to getting it working and thought that someone here could advise, or point me to some (web) reference

Newbie questions (updating, ports, etc.)

2009-12-03 Thread Richard Mace
I recently installed FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE on my home desktop and am considering making the switch from Debian GNU/Linux. I have a few questions which I am hoping the list can clarify for me. 1.) Keeping installed ports/packages up to date. As far as I can tell from the docs, perhaps the most co
