Recording from sound card

I'm having problems trying to record from a sound card under 8.1-RELEASE. The last time I tried this was many releases ago, possibly 4.x-RELEASE. Back then I would do something like cat /dev/dsp file but now when I try it I just end up with a 0 byte file. I'm using a different sound card than

New IDE drive in old PC

I have an old (very old) ASUS P5 motherboard running FreeBSD 5.4. The boot disk is a 40MB Western Digital WD400 IDE drive jumpered to only use 32MB so it can be booted from since the BIOS in this PC (the latest and greatest) can't deal with anything larger than 32MB. This PC is working well for
