8.3 hanging on boot, Dell 1950 with mfi and qlogic HBA

I feel sure I'm missing something pretty obvious here but I can't figure out what. I have a Dell 1950 which I just installed 8.3 (amd64) onto. It has an internal OS drive on mfi (Dell PERC) and a qlogic QLE2462 for external SAN connection. Problem is, the machine hangs on boot

test server so the drive has no config on it before installing it into the server with the failed drive? Are the SAS drives in a Dell 1950 hot swap by chance? Have not had a drive go like this with no spares around before. Thanks. Better to ask Dell weather they're hot swap or not
