You might need to force the rebuild of every port
portupgrade -a -f
Depending on which X window manager you are using, sometimes the a rebuild
doesn't catch all the real dependencies that will be caught in a complete
forced rebuild.

I have had similar issues moving 6.0 to 6.1 with an nvidia card. My box
was not locked up, but the console sure was.

After I upgraded to 6.1 doing so will instantly freeze my system, and as
soon as I press any key it will reboot. Nothings gets into the logs.
