I've got 5.2.1-RELEASE installed on an AccelerTech AT02161-A board running a single 1.4Ghz Opteron. The board has the PDC20319 onboard. I've got a Seagate 120GB drive attached to both SATA channels 2 and 3. The raid 1 array was created in the Promise bios and the OS was installed on the array ar0. The machine boots up, sees the disks, sees the controller and sees the array no problem. Everything looks good until I try to test the array. I yank out any of the two drives and the machine freezes after a few seconds. No error messages, no nothing.

Is there in fact a problem or do I have unrealistic expectations of the raid's capabilities?
