User startx ?

As root I can start X-windows with startx, but as a user I get this message: xauth: timeout in locking authority file ... This is on FreeBSD 4.9 with XFree86-3.3.6, Xfree86-4.x won't run with my graphics card. I installed wrapper-1.0.3 from packages, how do you configure and run it? Is this the
