As root I can start X-windows with startx,
but as a user I get this message:
xauth: timeout in locking authority file ...
This is on FreeBSD 4.9 with XFree86-3.3.6,
Xfree86-4.x won't run with my graphics card.

Been there, but it's been a while.
Check perms on $HOMEDIR/.Xauthority

I meant check "owner" of $HOMEDIR/.Xauthority
