Why oh why are there projects that provide the same functionality and
files in the same locations? These two ports, avahi-libdns and
mDNSresponder, have given me nothing but PROBLEMS when using portmaster
to upgrade (or any other tool to install something else, such as KDE4).

I'm running 8-Stable and current ports.
I installed mdnsd in an attempt to check out KDE4's Network Services use of
zeroconf.
I get these messages on the console:

Hi all
I have installed the net/mDNSResponder port on a FreeBSD 7.2 i386
computer. Set to launch the mdnsd on start up (in /etc/rc.conf).
Changed "hosts" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf to "hosts: files mdns dns".
Rebooted.

I have pkg_deleted either of them but KDE4 still pulls both of them up

I bumped into the same conflict, although not because of the same packages. I
just unistalled mdnsreposnder and replaced it with avahi+libdns, replacing also
the dependencies with pkgdb.
Both I and the apps are none the wiser for the change ...but nothing seems to

I have a problem when I try to update my "FreeBSD-6.2-STABLE i386
xorg-7.2 kde-3.5.6" with:
pkgdb -F
portupgrade -aPP
It seems that fr-kde-i18n-3.5.6_1 require net/mDNSResponder.
But net/mDNSResponder conflicts with avahi+libdns which is required by
firefox-2.0.0.4_1.

This issue was solved quite some time ago. The agreement still stands as I
remember.
