Could you please define 'rip a data cd' ?
What exactly from this command:
# dd if=/dev/acd0c of=file.iso bs=2048
doesn't fit your

If you define 'ripping a data cd' as 'creating an ISO image', you can
use ports/sysutils/xcdroast, which is also a nice X11 frontend to
cdrecord.
