First off, welcome to FreeBSD. As the others stated, FreeBSD is quite
different in that there is a distinction between installing/updating 3rd
party software (called ports), or the base operating system (kernel and
system).
There are multiple ways to update the base system and kernel as well
ns that freebsd makes that linux does not is
between the base system and 3rd party software. Hence you will find no
unified tool that upgrades everything like apt does for debian. The
link above explains how to deal with 3rd party software. For the

Hmmm. There's actually a certain appeal to installing v7.1 from scratch. RHEL
has the option of creating SoftRAID mirrors at install time (and later, of
course). Does the FreeBSD installer have that capability, as well? If so,
no it doesn't. but nobody force you to use installer at all.

Today I upgraded my system (ports) so I got x.org 7.4 installed.
Given the various entries in /usr/ports/UPDATING about the recent
updates for xorg I wonder what the correct settings/combinations are
for my installation:

You see, I can logon, except in graphical user mode.
This happend after complete update (gnome2 included)
I get a different logon prompt, and then I already know I won't be able to
logon.

As far as I know you cannot use freebsd-update on stable releases.
Use *default release=cvs tag=RELENG_7_1 instead to track a release,
That will get you back to 7.1 p nr and allows you to do binary upgrades
again.
