multiple CPUTYPEs?

Greetings folks, Is it possible to have multiple /usr/obj directories compiled with different CPUTYPEs? A month or so ago I remember someone was having trouble installing onto a 486 from a system whose userland was compiled with i686 but whose /usr/obj was compiled with i486. Installworld was
