It appears to be supported in HEAD but I'd rather not use that. I did
try a quick hack MFC for test purposes
Preparation first:
$ mkdir x
$ cd x/
$ touch y
$ ln -s y y.0
$ ln -s y.0 y.0.0
$ cd ..
Demonstration of expected behavior:
$ pax -w -f x.tar -s #x#z# x
$ pax -vf x.tar
