across. It is, as far as i understand, to address the problems you

Are you by any chance using PCI NIC's? PCI Bus is limited to somewhere around 1
Gbit/s.
So if you consider;
Theoretical maxium = ( 1Gbps - pci_overhead )

I believe I read somewhere that 802.11b standard supports larger MTUs than 1500.
I know basic ethernet MTU is 1500 but even my crappy old Nortel 8603 routing switch
supports up to MTU 1960
