  Welcome.  Getting started as a FreeCol contributor is summarized at

Any bug fixes are welcome.  Just beware that some recent bugs are moot due to 
being reported during a rewrite of the production code.  One area we have 
trouble is with windows and macos specific bugs, as the main developers use 
linux.

There is a regression test suite available off the "test" target in the main 
ant build file.  I use some scripts that currently live in test/bin to analyze 
the overall AI performance.  Nothing substitutes for play testing however.
