It appears that our favorite ath9k_htc free-firmwared wifi dongle does not work with current (1.4.x) network-mananger versions. In my tests, it is unable to associate with open wifi networks (at least), and when it is used in AP mode ("connection sharing"), other devices in turn are unable to associate with it. (I've seen this happen both with WPA-PSK enabled and with no encryption enabled.)
A workaround is to add something like this to /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and then restart network-manager: [device] wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=0 Possibly relevant bugreport: <https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=771005> Many thanks for Thomas Haller (<thaller> on freenode) for helping me out with this.
