Hi Jim, I think I use a reduced local install. My .xinitrc says:
mkfontdir $HOME/.dosemu
xset fp+ $HOME/.dosemu
... where ~/.dosemu contains my copy of vga.pcf.gz ...
(no fonts.* and no other *.pcf* files there)
