I was unable to read CD/DVD-ROMs in FreeDOS even though I tried a number of different drivers (ATAPI-CD, ATAPICDD, VIDE-CDD, XCDROM, and even the venerable CYBIDE).  WIth some very high-powered help, the problem was finally solved, so I thought I'd pass the solution along as I know other people have had similar problems.  My mobo is a Tyan S5360 (i7520), new last year, with a Phoenix cME First BIOS Workstation PRO v. 1.05.  The mobo includes an I/O chip with two SATA channels and two IDE channels.  What was happening was that the CD/DVD drives weren't being found by the drivers.  It turned out that I had set the IDE channels to "native mode" in the BIOS, which caused the drivers (all but one of which were written before 2000) to fail because their hardware addresses weren't the traditional values.  So if anyone is having a CD/DVD drive recognition problem in FreeDOS, try turning off "native mode" for the IDE channels in the BI OS.
